Erectile Dysfunction And Diabetes

When a man cannot get an erection during sexual intercourse, or cannot maintain an erection until the end of the act, erectile dysfunction or impotence can be talked about.

Physical causes of erectile dysfunction include:

  • alcohol and tobacco;

  • fatigue;

  • hypogonadism;

  • liver or kidney disorders;

  • multiple sclerosis;

  • Parkinson’s disease.

However, erectile dysfunctions can be caused by certain medical problems, such as:

  • diabetes;

  • high blood pressure;

Psychically, impotence can be triggered by:

  • an unpleasant sexual experience, nervousness, a previous episode of impotence;

  • stress;

  • depression;

  • problems and misunderstandings in the couple relationship;

  • Fear of a negative reaction of the partner during the sexual act.

Erectile dysfunction and diabetes

There are several reasons why men with diabetes have a higher risk of erectile dysfunction:

  • diabetes can affect the nerves, erectile tissues and small blood vessels in the penis, just like any other tissue in the body;

  • nerve damage, known as neuropathy, may mean that there is less sensitivity in the penis and less signaling to the brain, these causing difficulties in obtaining and maintaining an erection, explains sexologist doctor in Delhi;

  • lesions in the erectile tissue will prevent the muscle fibers from inside it to relax properly so that the penis cannot be filled with blood during the erection;

  • lesions of the blood vessels will also prevent the filling of the erectile tissues with blood, says sex specialist in Delhi;

  • men with diabetes are more prone to high blood pressure; many of the drugs used to treat high blood pressure may be responsible for the development of erectile dysfunction;

  • diabetes increases the risk of atherosclerosis. If blood vessels affecting the penis are affected, impotence may occur.

Blood glucose level and erectile dysfunction

Smoking and poor blood sugar control expose the patient to a higher risk for complications, such as erectile dysfunction, warns top sexologist in Delhi.

This is why it is important that diabetes treatment is optimized: good blood glucose control will help maintain the body’s ability to produce an erection. Stopping smoking is always a good idea.

How common are sexual problems in patients with diabetes?

About 50% of men with diabetes will at one time experience a type of sexual problem or loss of sexual appetite as a result of the disease. In men, the most common sexual problem caused by diabetes is erectile dysfunction, says sexologist in Delhi.

Most people with type 2 diabetes are overweight and have only mild symptoms, such as thirst or the need to urinate more often, a few years before their diabetes is diagnosed.

Unfortunately, these mild symptoms do not mean that diabetes does not cause nerve and arterial injury, and a high proportion of newly discovered men with type 2 diabetes already have erectile dysfunction at the time of diabetes diagnosis.

This highlights the need for people to be aware of the possible symptoms of diabetes and to consult the best sexologist in Delhi if they suspect they have the disease.

Treatment of erectile dysfunction in diabetics

There is no reason why diabetes should suppress the sex life of the patient. Often the first step – recognizing the condition – is the hardest thing to do. Once this has been done, with the support of the sexologist in Delhi and the partner, the erectile dysfunction treatment in Delhi is most often effective.

The sexologist in Delhi will decide on the most effective treatment, after exposing to the patient the advantages and disadvantages of each one. The prescribed treatment will depend on:

  • individual circumstances such as the causes of erectile dysfunction;

  • another condition that the patient may have;

  • the medication already administered to the patient;

  • the personal preference of the patient.

Most treatments available can be effective in patients with diabetes. If one treatment is not effective, another may be tried. Many patients now first try oral treatments.

Oral treatment

Sildenafil citrate (Viagra), like any other treatment for erectile dysfunction, may be less effective in men with diabetes than in the population without diabetes. However, in clinical trials, it has been shown to be effective in the treatment of erectile dysfunction in patients with diabetes.

It is a suitable treatment for any patient with diabetes, regardless of the type of diabetes they suffer from, suggests sexologist in Delhi.

Also, Tadalafil (Cialis) and Vardenafil HCl (Levitra) have been shown to be effective in treating erectile dysfunction in patients with diabetes.
